MATERIALS
110 lb. card stock (or the heaviest your printer will handle)
Drinking straw
Glue, glue stick, or glue pen
Scissors
Craft knife
INSTRUCTIONS
1) Download the template for the dreidel box by clicking on the link below. When the page opens with the template, right click and select "Save Picture As…". When the Save window opens select the folder you want to put the picture in and make certain you change the file type to either GIF or BMP (GIF is preferable if you have that option, but if you are on AOL you may only be able to use BMP).
2) Open a blank page in your graphics program in landscape orientation. Import the template and resize it to exactly 10.4 " wide by 7.22" high ( or 999 X 693 pixels). This size will insure that the small circle for the drinking straw will be the right size. Make sure that you have the template placed on the page to allow for any unprintable margins.
3) Add desired clipart to the sides of the box template. Save the file.
4) Print a test page on plain paper.
5) Once you are satisfied with the placement, print the box on the card stock.
6) Cut out along all the outer lines and, using a craft knife, cut out the small circle on the box top. Save the scrap. You'll need a small square to anchor the drinking straw.
7) Fold along all tab lines. Fold all sides, top and bottom as well as the flap on the box top.
8) Lay the box out flat, printed side up and apply glue to the four tabs on the triangles (box bottom) and the tab on the side of the box. Carefully begin to adhere the bottom triangles to one another and then adhere the side tab.
9) Cut four small slits around the bottom of the drinking straw from bottom to top. Spread the four resulting tabs and fold them back so that they will keep the straw from sliding out of the box top. Insert the straw through the hole from the inside out and pull until the tabs are resting on the inside of the box top.
10) Cut a small square of cardstock (approximately 1 to 1 1/2" square) from the scrap pieces and cover one side with glue. Press this in place on the inside of the box top, covering the tabs on the bottom of the straw, and hold it in place for a few minutes to allow the glue to set before closing the box top. Trim a few inches off the top of the straw.
That's all there is too it! Fill with chocolate coins or other candies or a small toy and watch your child's eyes light up when they open it!
